leans folks want to party. there's so much going on what do you do? for a little advice we came to a place where some new orleans folks hang out called the boxing room restaurant here in san francisco. this is what we learned. what's there to do in new orleans besides the four horse at the super bowl? you've heard of mardi gras. in fact, mardi gras and the super bowl will be under way around the same time. the partiers taking a break for the game partying on. parades are under way daily rolling continuously until february2. the 9ers and ravens play the super bowl on the 3rd. and when that game is history, they will still be partying with mardi gras. this is a little bit of new orleans right here in san francisco. it's the boxing room restaurant on grove. for san franciscans going to new orleans, chef justin has some suggestions. >> new orleans is a beautiful place to eat, drink, listen to live music. don't have a play, go slow, walk around the city. enjoy it for its beauty,

natural beauty of being an old city. meet people and just not have a plan and just go with it. >> reporter: the land of the big easy you don't need a plan. shelley says just go with the flow. >> eating a lot, definitely hit the local holes in the wall, poboy shops, drink a lot. you can see go drink so that's always fun walk around, zachary's what not. redfish grill one of our favorite for charbroiled oysters. have a fantastic time. new orleans is a great city. >> reporter: go there without a plan, eat, drink, have a good time and enjoy the big show the game and the other shows. >> thank you, don knapp. our kim coyle joins us now. kim, you have been talking to a player who a lot of players on the team look up to. >> there's been obviously a lot of talk about ray lewis and his leadership skills. but randy moss once famously said i play when i want to play, during his younger days but the 35-year-old has been a model citizens in his first

season with the 49ers. just as he promised during training camp. >> i want to know what i can do to make the nfl better. >> he caught only three touchdowns during the regular season tied for the fewest of his hall of fame career but one of the most popular players in the locker room and made a huge impact with the team's younger players, specifically, rookie runningback lamichael james. >> he's my guy. me and him. he gives me a lot of life lessons not just football but, you know, life in general but, you know, he is a competitor, you know, he knows the ins and outs. he's a savvy player. he keeps everybody motivated. anytime he is on the field, he is a great guy. i wouldn't trade him for anybody else. >> james was just 9 when moss came into the league and i think moss will turn back the clock to the '98 moss of the

vikings come super bowl. definitely somebody the ravens will have to account for. it makes a huge difference in the locker room even if it's not reflected on the field. >> thank you. we are your super bowl station. we're sending a team of reporters to cover super bowl xlvii in new orleans. our coverage will include sports director dennis o'donnell, vern glenn, michelle griego and mike sugerman. another bay area gun buy- back produced a large turnout. like others, the offer of cash for weapons was an incentive but as cbs 5 reporter patrick sedillo shows us one prominent victim of gun violence says people are rethinking gun ownership. reporter: the cars lined up for blocks for the san mateo gun buy-back. >> handguns is $100. assault rifles are $200. >> reporter: and there were. besides those, all kinds of guns were brought in. >> we'll give money for up to 3 guns and accept as many as people want to turn in. >> reporter: the idea is simple. it's turned this into this and it's working.

>> this is a no questions asked anonymous gun buy-back event. >> reporter: donald smith brought in two old rifles. >> haven't been used in many years. so time to get rid of them. >> reporter: as easy as that -- >> one and two. >> reporter: he got his $200 no questions asked. where's the money? >> the money is right here. all right? >> reporter: already spend it? >> you bet. we're heading out of town. >> this is a 100-round magazine. >> reporter: congresswoman jackie speier was in attendance. she was shot in guyana in 1978. she says she doesn't own a gun but her husband does. >> there is a purpose for guns in our society, for hunting, for sport, and any good hunter will say you don't need more than three to five rounds to hunt. and if you are not good enough with three to five rounds, you probably shouldn't be hunting. [ laughter ] >> reporter: reporting from san mateo, patrick sedillo, cbs 5. >> at last count more than 500 firearms were taken in and $53,000 in cash handed out.

the guns will be destroyed. dozens of people walked along the waterfront today to show support for gun control. the event was organized by the group one million moms for gun control. it was intended to show solidarity with a national march in washington, d.c. the group says it wants commonsense legislation for gun control and supports senator dianne feinstein's bill calling for a ban on assault weapons. the national march in washington drew thousands of participants. they carried signs with the names and pictures of gun violence victims. the walk for life is in its ninth year and went to justin herman plaza marking the anniversary of the roe vs. wade. police were evacuated

around 2 p.m. this afternoon. a bomb squad showed up took away a suspicious package. police wouldn't say what it was. startled. i thought it was an earthquake. >> still ahead, what happened way up in the sky that knocked out power at a bay area gym? >> plus for super bowl commercial lovers night vision teaming up for a lot of laughs. >> sometimes those commercials are better than the game. folks, around the bay area today a few showers outside. we costs some more raindrops coming our way. we'll tell you when coming up. >> hey, go 9ers. i'm rooting for you. >> let's go, 9ers. let's bring super bowl number 6 back to the bay. good luck. >> go, 9ers. i'll be rooting for you out on the east coast. >> who's got it better than us? nobody!

customers in san francisco's south of market area today. advertising bann a bizarre accident knocked out power to thousands in san francisco's south of market area today. a large advertising banner being pulled by a plane fell from the sky on to power lines at fifth and brannan streets. the sign made of plastic and metal apparently hit two high voltage wires causing them to short out. people in the nearby tennis club heard a loud noise as the

lights went out. >> i was startled from the noise. i thought it was an earthquake. but i just look around, didn't see anything, just smoke. thank goodness nobody was hurt. >> no injuries were record. about 2,000 customers in the south of market and china basin areas lost power. only a few are still in the dark. full power is expected to be restored by 7:00 tonight. well, tomorrow san francisco police are going to start ticketing drivers who don't feed the meters on sundays. a new rule went into effect but officers haven't been enforcing it. they have been giving out warnings, not citations. now you will have to pay to park from noon to 6. some advertisers are releasing super bowl commercials ahead of the game. here's one from nabisco. >> what are you doing? >> using night fishing goggles to make sure nobody touches my wheat thins. >> who's going to take your

some people like to go all out when it comes to their super bowl parties. we're gearing up from chairs to snacks to big screen tvs. some people go all out for their parties. anne makovec shows us how bay area fans are getting ready for the big game. >> now i'm going to have a big party. reporter: she's not alone now that the 9ers are in it to win it. people are getting ready for super game day get-togethers. she bought a new tv. >> had to be in before the super bowl. >> reporter: she didn't stop with the tv. >> then we added a sound bar. never heard of a sound bar but i think it will make watching the game cool. >> we got a lot of red and gold going on preparing for craziness. >> reporter: they have stocked

up here on everything from crazy glasses to 49er pinatas to necklaces with chickens on them. however random this stuff is selling like hotcakes. >> anything red and gold they are just everybody wants to represent right now. >> reporter: party supply store employee carl bernardo is excited for his team and his store. >> i was screaming. i'm a huge fan, excited for the super bowl. >> reporter: any good party has a well stocked buffet. >> it's good karma for the 9ers. it's going to help them win. >> reporter: some fans shopped this weekend so they weren't too pooped to party the next. >> it starts with a good meal. so hit up costco for all the good deals and we are ready to celebrate at our friend's house in the marina. >> reporter: with the winning combination of good food, new technology and good spirits, it should be quite a day to celebrate. >> go 9ers. >> reporter: anne makovec, cbs 5. san francisco isn't the only city with super bowl

fever. on the other side of the country people in baltimore are getting ready. the ravens have wrapped up the final home practice of the season and some of the players took a little time to meet with fans. they say they are as passionate as any. >> have all those fans out there after the game in foxboro, you would have thought we were playing at home. >> people in baltimore are also decking out their homes and businesses and others are getting ready to make the trek to new orleans for the game. lawrence karnow in tonight for roberta gonzales of the he brings a cold front is that what's coming in. >> kind of leftover moisture. we had that cold air that moved through this morning. chance of more rain overnight tonight. and one of those cool brisk days today. outside tonight, you still have mostly clear skies out over the bay. we have a couple of clouds floating through probably going to see more clouds throughout the night tonight with a chance of some showers.

probably late tonight after midnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. starting to get chilly in spots. 47 in santa rosa, 50 san jose, 55 degrees in san francisco. and 50 degrees in livermore. overnight tonight these lows will drop off. some places at or below freezing. some partly cloudy skies late tonight and again a chance of a couple of raindrops doesn't look like much. tomorrow morning maybe a few leftover raindrops but if you sleep in you'll probably miss it. after that cool, brisk, sunshine, passing clouds. highs only in the low to mid- 50s. if you plan to head around the state watch out for some so if in the high country just a few flakes. and some chilly temperatures. 31 yosemite tomorrow for a high and 34 in lake tahoe. we have that system off the coastline spinning there and it's bringing with it a few more clouds over into the tonight and dropping into the bay area. you can see clouds gathering tonight and early tomorrow morning bringing light showers in the south bay and coastline.

sunday passing clouds, cool brisk breezy conditions. overnight lows cold in spots about 30 in fairfield, 34 in livermore and 33 degrees in the napa valley. temperatures in the bay area in the 50s, low 50s at the coastline, 50s toward the east bay. inside the bay those winds will be kicking up outside so mid- 50s. but going to feel cooler than that. breezy toward the afternoon. next couple of days, though, things settle down a bit. a ridge of high pressure sneaks in here and by tuesday a return to 60s, maybe even mid-60s as we head toward the end of the week. and then it looks like some sunshine continuing into next weekend. all right. kim, what about sports? >> i have a little tennis for you. i know it's a little off topic but there was a dramatic finish in the australian open and the sharks look to lower the boom on the avalanche. we're next with sports.

cbs 5 sports director dennis o'donnell in the big easy. >> is he working? >> no. but he did arrive in new orleans. >> but he is probably going to be wearing that shirt for a while because his luggage didn't arrive. that's the clover grill. he was a big hit there. i shared a meal with him there a few years ago during the preseason. kind of a greasy spoon but very tasty. >> we'll keep his eyes out to see if he gets his luggage anytime soon. >> the sharks looking good in teal as you are ann. patrick marleau scored two goals in each of the first three games. what are the odds he would do it again to the avalanche this

afternoon? sims madison missed a great game. his daddy produces a preseason for cbs. sky gomez made his debut with the sharks. stewart woke up with a hit on gabriel and o'brien goes after stewart and gets a four minute penalty. when you're on the sharks power play they make you pay. patrick marleau backhands a rebounded into the net. 1-0 sharks. still on the power play, thorn -- boyle to thornton to marleau make it 2-0. another two-goal game for marleau a league leading eight goals this season. they are well in control late in the second. the rookie irwin with a slat shot. sharks win 4-0 to improve to 4- 0 on the season. [ bubbling water ] >> that sound means the return of the dorsal fin digest. the top line of thornton, marleau an pavelski combined for 10 goals and 20 assists in the first four games. marleau is the first player

since 1917 to have eight goals after the first four games. they play again tomorrow afternoon against vancouver. women's australian open final after winning the first setted li na's ankle gives out midway through the second set. she was taped up. victoria azarenka took advantage. she evens it up winning the second set 6-4. li na was up in the second set. up 2-1 in the third set. fireworks set off as part of the celebration so the match would be delayed for 10 minutes and on the first point back, na's ankle gives out again but this time, it wasn't just her ainge come. she falls and the back of her head hits the court. she had to pass a concussion test but still has a sense of humor. she continues and on championship point li na hits it long and the number one ranked azarenka wins the aussie open for the second straight year. mccann pavilion jumping for st. mary's and pepperdine. laveque into the lane for the layup off the game with a game-

high 19 points off the bench gaels up by 9 at the half. second half holt to jordan for the three. another win for st. mary's. 84-72 gaels have won 5 straight. kerry keating and santa clara visiting san diego up five in the second half kevin foster with a nice pass to mark tressal ini throws it down 25 points. rock amour with the offensive board takes the three himself. he had 18. santa clara over san diego 64- 50. that is santa clara 16th win of the season. fog wiped out the third round at torrey pines. tiger woods is in the lead by 2 strokes but check out jerry y glover playing kelly and lucas glover. playing a little baseball to kill time. tiger resumes his quest tomorrow weather permitting. in the '80s, the washington redskins offensive line was known as the hogs. while there's no nickname for the 49ers o line they feel they resemble a different animal.

so last night in miami the heat fans hit a shot from midcourt and we'll let you know if we have that in a minute out of nowhere lebron tackles him. we'll try to get that on for you tonight but it's good that dennis arrived in new orleans safely. the whole team is almost on the ground. the 49ers are going to leave tomorrow. so i mean, i wish the game was being played tomorrow. it's such build-up. i know it's going to be exciting with media day and we'll look forward to their coverage down there. >> we are going to see from the harbaugh brothers. what do you think that press conference is going to look like? >> total opposite. john is a character. so charismatic. likes to have fun with the media. jim is so straight-laced. it's going to be tough from the parents. i don't care you will hear a lot from jack. he analyzes game type for both boys after each game to help them out a former coach himself. it's going to be interesting how the family is going to
